Am I in Perimenopause? You’re Not Imagining It

If you’ve been feeling a bit off lately - maybe waking up with uncharacteristic anxiety, experiencing brain fog during meetings, or tracking cycle shifts - you might be wondering if perimenopause has officially entered the chat. If you feel unsure, you're in good company: recent data shows that one in three women over 35 aren't sure whether they've started the perimenopause transition.
The reason for the confusion? Perimenopause doesn't come with a neat checklist or an exact age cut-off. This phase is unique for each woman. Most of us grew up thinking menopause meant sudden hot flashes at 50, but perimenopause can start years earlier in your late 30s or early 40s. Symptoms often show up as mood shifts, disrupted sleep, joint aches, or fatigue - sometimes before period changes ever begin!
Because medical training around midlife hormone changes has historically lagged, many women find their symptoms dismissed or chalked up to basic stress. We've been told to change our diet, exercise more, reduce stress, and get more sleep. Which we are typically already doing! And after all of that, we are given an antidepressant and sent on our way. Oh, by the way, antidepressants can cause weight gain, changes in sleep (not always for the good), and you cannot come off of them easily when you are ultimately told you are in one of the stages of menopause. Fun, right?!
Knowing what's happening in your body is empowering. Tracking your physical and emotional symptoms gives you clear data to share with a knowledgeable provider so you can get real answers - not guesses.
