Menopause Isn't Just About Hot Flashes—Let's Talk Heart Health

Hot flashes get the headlines, but heart health deserves attention too. Menopause may be the perfect time to focus on prevention and long-term wellness.

When most people think about menopause, they think about hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings.

But one of the most important conversations happening right now involves something many women aren't talking about enough: heart health.

Recent research suggests that changes in cardiovascular health can begin during perimenopause, even before menopause officially occurs. As estrogen levels decline, the body may experience changes that affect cholesterol, blood vessels, blood pressure, and blood sugar regulation.

This doesn't mean every woman will develop heart problems. But it does mean that midlife can be a great opportunity to check in on your overall health.

Simple steps can make a meaningful difference:

  • Schedule routine wellness exams - and keep the appointments!

  • Know your cholesterol numbers - all of them; all it takes is for one to be out of whack.

  • Monitor blood pressure regularly - low blood pressure can cause problems just as high blood pressure.

  • Stay physically active - even if it's just a walk once a day, or lifting a pair of dumbbells for a couple of sets.

  • Focus on protein, fiber, fruits, and vegetables - beware of fad diets; eat a well-rounded diet.

  • Prioritize sleep and stress management - meditation before bed (instead of mindless scrolling) can really help.

Many women spend years caring for everyone else while putting their own health last. Menopause can serve as a reminder that your health matters, too.

Think of this stage of life as a reset button rather than a decline. Small, consistent habits often have a bigger impact than dramatic changes.

You deserve to feel strong, energized, and informed as you move through menopause.

When was the last time you had a heart health checkup?
