Have you ever felt so tired right after waking up that it feels like you could sleep for a week and still not feel rested? Does it require a Herculean effort just to get out of bed in the morning? If I was 80 years old, I would expect to feel that way…but in my 40s and 50s? Really??

My job of raising a child was done. What did I have to be tired about ALL THE TIME?

Internet search: Why am I so tired all of the time?

Answer: Get 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep; exercise daily (but not within 2 hours of bedtime); eat a healthy diet; lower stress levels.

How does one achieve those objectives when our hormones have got up and went?! Even on a good day in my 20s I never achieved all of these. What HAS worked for me is taking progesterone as part of my hormone replacement therapy (HRT) since I still have a uterus and taking a magnesium supplement at bedtime. And the HRT has seemed to silence the urge to wake up and visit the bathroom in the middle of the night as well (that was usually around 2:30 – 3:00 AM).

Talking to a menopause doctor about HRT options and trying the different methods has definitely helped me. It is okay to get a second opinion from a trained specialist if your general practitioner has not been able to help you.
